According to a study by Jabil, 57 per cent of telecom stakeholders or executives believe that open radio access network (RAN) will be ready for widespread deployment alongside 5G within the next two years.

As per the findings, 55 per cent of surveyed respondents stated that they are seriously considering an OpenRAN strategy for their companies, while 22 per cent already have one in place.

Further, 81 per cent of respondents believe that the adoption of OpenRAN will reduce capital expenditures, while 85 per cent believe it will lead to reduced operating expenditures.

The survey by Jabil also revealed that telecom stakeholders are optimistic about the prospects of 5G, with 65 per cent citing it as a superior technology that will dramatically transform the industry. Also, 59 per cent of the respondents strongly agreed that 5G will create opportunities for new telecom companies, and 53 per cent agreed that 5G will deliver new business models as well as new technology.

The availability of spectrum, or a lack of it, has been cited as the most pressing technical challenge by 32 per cent of respondents.
