The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has so far imposed a fine of Rs 50.4 million on operators for sending unsolicited messages to their subscribers.

TRAI has imposed financial disincentives on various operators including Bharti, Aircel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices Limited, Unitech Wireless, Videocon Telecommunications, Sistema Shyam Teleservices Limited, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, Quadrant Televentures and Loop Telecom.

Further, TRAI has disconnected 4,17,898 numbers belonging to unregistered telemarketers between September 27, 2011 and October 31, 2013. Besides, 260 notices have been sent to registered telemarketers with a deduction in their security deposit in the same time frame. Moreover, 17 registered telemarketers have been blacklisted during this period, whereas 1,45,696 unregistered telemarketers have been blacklisted for two years until October 31, 2013.
