Operators including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India owe the government about Rs 179.8 billion in licence fee and spectrum charges. According to Milind Deora, Minister of minister of state for communications and IT, operators owe the government Rs 20.73 billion as licence fee and another Rs 159.07 as spectrum charges.

Among various operators, Bharti Airtel has a total outstanding of Rs 55.40 billion, followed by Vodafone India, which owes a total of Rs 38.46 billion. Other players such as Reliance Communications owe Rs 24.22 billion, Idea Cellular owes Rs 20.29 billion, Aircel owes Rs 13.51 billion and Tata Teleservices Limited owes Rs 14.02 billion.

Further, Deora stated that several interim cases are pending against defaulting operators before the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal and High Courts of Kerala, Gauwhati and Madras.
