According to a report by GSMA, 5G will have a $27 billion impact on India’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030, if not constrained by spectrum shortages.

As per the report, a total of two gigahertz (GHz) mid-band spectrum per market will be needed by 2030 on average and six GHz capacity will be critical to support the rapid growth and to foster innovation, affordable connectivity, and economic growth.

Further, GSMA stated that a clear roadmap to deliver spectrum for growing mobile demand is needed. In addition, upper six GHz band must be part of that roadmap while bringing it into commercial use will require close collaboration between the government and the mobile industry.

The report also stated that India remains amongst the fastest growing 5G markets globally and has witnessed a massive growth in mobile download speeds, making it into the top 50 of the Speedtest Global Index list. India is also one of the leading markets in the Asia Pacific in number of 5G subscribers, smartphone adoption and 4G penetration and this trend is expected to continue for the years to come, with almost 48 per cent connections in 5G, one of the region’s highest subscription growths by 2030.
