Work has started in the Krishnagiri district to lay optical fibre cables for high-speed broadband connectivity under phase-II of the BharatNet project. The project is being implemented by Tamil Nadu Fibernet Corporation and aims at providing indiscriminate broadband connectivity in all the blocks and village panchayats.
Under this project, 85 per cent of the cables will be set up along the existing electricity lines and 15 per cent of the cables will be set up as underground lines. All the panchayat service centres and block service centres are functioning as nodal points in the implementation of this infrastructure.
Once the optical fibre cables are laid down, the panchayat service centres will receive speeds of 1 Gbps. This will be followed by the digitisation of public services, which will also include payment of property taxes, water taxes, building permissions in the panchayats etc.
