As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’ under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, the messenger banned over 7.9 million accounts in India in March 2024.
The report stated that between March 1, 2024, and March 31, 2024, the company banned 800,000 accounts. Of this 1,430,000 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from users.
With over 500 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 12,782 complaint reports in March 2024, out of which remedial action based on the reports was taken for 11 of those. The remedial action may vary from banning an account to restoring a previously banned account.
