As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’, under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2022, the messenger banned over 7.6 millon accounts in India in February 2024.

The report stated that between February 1, 2024, and February 29, 2024, the company banned 7,628,000 accounts. Of this, 1,424,000 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from the users.

With over 500 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 16,618 complaint reports in February 2024, out of which remedial action based on the reports were taken for 22 of those. The remedial action may vary from banning an account to restoring a previously banned account.
