As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’, under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2022, the messenger banned over 7.5 million accounts in India in October 2023.

The report stated that between October 1, 2023, and October 31, 2023, the company banned 7,548,000 accounts. Of this, 1,919,000 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from the users.

With over 500 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 9,063 complaint reports in October 2023, out of which remedial action based on the reports was taken for 12 of those. The remedial action may vary from banning an account to restoring a previously banned account. Meanwhile, the company received five orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee in October 2023, which it later complied with.
