As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’ under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2022,  WhatsApp messenger has banned over 7.4 million accounts in India in August 2023.

As per the report, between August 1, 2023, and August 31, 2023, the company banned 7,420,748 accounts. Of this, 3,506,905 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from the users. With over 500 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 14,767 complaint reports in August, out of which remedial action based on the reports were taken for 71 of those. The remedial action may vary from banning an account to restoring a previously banned account. Meanwhile, the company received only one order from the Grievance Appellate Committee in August, which it later complied with.
