As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’ under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2022, WhatsApp messenger has banned more than 7.2 million accounts in India in July 2023.

As per the report, between July 1, 2023, and July 31, 2023, 7,228,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned, and 3,108,000 of these accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users. In July 2023, the messaging platform in the nation received a record 11,067 complaint reports, and 72 of those records were actioned.

According to the company’s report, there were five orders received from the newly established panel, the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), all of which were complied with promptly.
