As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’, under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2022, the messenger banned over 7.1 millon accounts in India in September 2023.
The report stated that between September 1, 2023, and September 30, 2023, the company banned 7,111,000 accounts. Of this, 2,571,000 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from the users.
With over 500 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 10,442 complaint reports in September 2023, out of which remedial action based on the reports were taken for 85 of those. The remedial action may vary from banning an account to restoring a previously banned account. Meanwhile, the company received six orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee in September 2023, which it later complied with.
