As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’ under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2022, the messenger has banned over 2.3 million accounts in India in October 2022. As many as 811,000 accounts were proactively banned before any reports from users.

According to a statement by the company, in addition to responding to and taking action on user complaints through the grievance channel, it has also deployed tools and resources to prevent harmful behaviour on the platform.
