As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’ under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, the messenger banned more than 8.5 million accounts in India in September 2024 for violating local laws.
The report stated that between September 1, 2024, and September 30, 2024, the company banned 85,84,000 accounts. Of these, 16,58,000 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from users.
With over 550 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 8,161 complaint reports in September 2024, out of which remedial action based on the reports were taken for 33 of those. Among other categories, 3,196 were support-related grievances, with 61 accounts actioned. Safety-related complaints totalled 870, account support 238, and product support 113. .
