As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’ under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, the messenger banned more than 6.6 million accounts in India in May 2024 for violating local laws.

The report stated that between May 1, 2024, and May 31, 2024, the company banned 66,20,000 accounts. Of this 12,55,000 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from users.

With over 550 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 13,367 complaint reports in May 2024, out of which remedial action based on the reports were taken for 31 of those. Meanwhile, the company received 11 orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee in May 2024, which it later complied with.
