Warid Telecom, an Abu Dhabi Group subsidiary, plans to start operations in Bangladesh in early 2007 as the country’s sixth mobile phone carrier. The group would invest a large portion of its slated $1 billion investment in Bangladesh over the coming years, in the project. Warid Telecom received the licence in October 2005 for $50 million to start operations in Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector ?? the fastest growing industry in the country. The company’s rivals would include Banglalink, Grameen Phone, Aktel, CityCell and state-run Teletalk.
