Vodafone India has developed a low-cost mobile internet teaching tool for 1,000 government schools in rural areas across India.
WebBox is an internet-enabled smartphone, which is repackaged as a keyboard with a 600 MHz processor that runs on an Android 2.1 operating system and can be plugged to a TV set for delivering online digital education content. The device is equipped with an application which contains state curriculum-based content in mathematics, science, english and hindi.
The operator has concluded a successful WebBox deployment pilot along with Pearson Education. Vodafone India will initially roll out WebBox in 12 states in partnership with Pratham Foundation, a Mumbai-based non-governmental organisation. Subsequently, the company plans to offer the product commercially to education service providers operating in rural markets.
