Vodafone India, along with ICICI Bank, has introduced mobile money transfer and payment service called, ?M-Pesa? in the eastern region covering states like West Bengal (including Kolkata), Bihar and Jharkhand.
With an M-Pesa account, users will be able to deposit and withdraw cash from select outlets, transfer money within India, make payments to recharge their mobile phones, clear utility bills etc. Currently, the M-Pesa service can be used for only remittances.
Commenting on the launch, Marten Pieters, managing director and chief executive officer, Vodafone India, says, ?Vodafone?s low-cost distribution model can be used to leverage banking services in rural areas. It will bring about financial inclusion. We hope that the money transfer solutions will be used by the huge migrant population living in eastern region.??
