Vodafone India and Aircel are in talks with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to suggest methods to expedite the execution of National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) project. Earlier, DoT?s expert committee on NOFN had asked for suggestions to fast-track the project through the deployment of best technology options. The panel is expected to submit its report by March 2015.

As part of its response to speed up the rollout of optical fibre cable (OFC) network, Vodafone India has shared its experience on such rollouts in India and globally with DoT and the industry associations.

Also, Aircel had a workshop with DoT and Bharat Broadband Network Limited on how the operator can help on the project by collaborating to build the high-speed data network.

Under the NOFN project, the government has set a target of rolling out OFC network across 50,000 village panchayats by March 31, 2015, 100,000 more by March 2016 and another 100,000 by the end of 2016. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 300 billion.
