In a statement, Vodafone Essar has said that it plans to discontinue services for prepaid customers whose numbers have remained inactive.

This refers to numbers from which no voice calls, text messages or data services have been sent or received for 60 days.

This guideline has been implemented keeping in mind the Department of Telecommunications? (DoT) guideline for allocation of a new number series based on subscribers in the visitor location register (VLR). This, the company says, has created a severe shortage of numbers for all telecom operators.

New customers will be intimated of the deactivation process in their starter kits while existing customers will be informed via SMS and outbound calls wherever possible.
