UK-based telco Vodafone and chip-maker Qualcomm have announced that they would join forces to develop a technical blueprint to enable telecom equipment suppliers to use open radio access network (RAN) technology.

According to the companies, the move aims to lower the entry barrier for many companies and drive diversification of network equipment vendors.

Recently, telecom operators and governments have been encouraging the development of open RAN technology to help more vendors to enter a market dominated by telecom equipment vendors like Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia.
