The telecommunication arm of the $4-billion Videocon Group, Videocon Telecom will bid for an additional 2 MHz of spectrum each in Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh circles in the forthcoming round of spectrum auction.

Currently, the operator holds 4.4 MHz of spectrum in the Punjab circle and 5 MHz of spectrum in the Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh circle.

According to Arvind Bali, director and chief executive officer, Videocon Telecom, ?Telecom is a long term business and any investment in this sector has to be looked at from a long term perspective. We have been contemplating the need for additional spectrum in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh telecom circles since there is always a trade-off between deploying additional sites and acquiring additional spectrum.?

Bali adds, ?Further, the incremental capacity created by the additional 2 MHz of spectrum will be at least two times the existing capacity given trunking efficiency. Also, the planned 2 MHz of additional spectrum in the Punjab circle being a liberalised one, will give us the option to offer 4G long term evolution narrow band service to users.?
