
Videocon Telecom has invested Rs 1.3 billion for upgrading its 2G network to 2.75 G enhanced data for GSM evolution (EDGE). This network is being upgraded in Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Gujarat circles. The move comes in line with the company?s strategy of focusing on its mobile internet users, 80 per cent of which use 2G enabled handsets.
The network investment spans across packet core, base station controller (BSC) upgrades, policy and charging rules function (PCRF), cache servers, capacity augmentation and other network and IT developments. The network upgrade is being conducted by Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei, which will also roll out long term evolution (LTE) packet core network in six telecom circles.
The company is also rolling out a marketing campaign to support the network upgrade. It plans to spend Rs 500 million on its marketing campaign, which includes above the line (ATL) and below the line (BTL) marketing.
