The last year has been challenging for Videocon Mobile Services, the GSM service brand of the Videocon Group. Over the years, the company’s attempts to sustain in the hyper competitive sector have had a strong bearing on its operations and finances. A disastrous blow came in the form of licence cancellation by the Supreme Court in early 2012.

Thus, its aggressive participation during the recently concluded auctions came as a great surprise to many in the industry. The company managed to bag spectrum in the Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh circle, as well as the five other circles of Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (East & West), Bihar and Jharkhand. Besides these circles, Videocon’s GSM service will be continuing in the Punjab circle where it is operating under brand sharing agreement with HFCL Infotel Limited.

Now, the company is looking at rolling out 4G services across these circles in the latter half of 2013. Commenting on this, Arvind Bali, director and chief executive officer, Videocon Mobile Services said, “We are strongly positioned in the circles we won spectrum in. Thus, we plan to provide our subscribers with an enhanced 4G FDD LTE-ready network which will enable deliverance of services and value-for-money product offerings.”

That apart, the operator aims to strengthen its market position and has identified certain thrust areas for 2013, including; ensuring better customer service, prudent network roll-out to strengthen its efforts towards asset sharing and pruning unprofitable areas and cost leadership through technology management and a renewed focus on eliminating operational inefficiencies.
