V Narayanan has been appointed as the secretary of the Department of Space. He will also be the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, effective January 14, 2025.

He will succeed S Somanath, who is concluding his tenure next week.

Narayanan is a distinguished scientist at ISRO with nearly forty years of experience and has held various significant positions within the Indian space organisation. His expertise is in rocket and spacecraft propulsion, and he previously served as the project director for the C25 Cryogenic Project of the GSLV Mk III vehicle. Under his leadership, the team successfully developed the C25 Stage, an essential component of GSLV Mk III.
