Uninor has started the process of refunding unutilised balance to its subscribers in the Mumbai circle. It will be soon providing its subscribers with porting codes to help them migrate to new service provider.

Earlier, in the wake of Supreme Court order, Uninor had to shut down its operations in Mumbai circle. As per the Supreme Court order, all the operators who lost their licences in February 2012 and did not participate in the 2G spectrum auction held in November 2012 had to cease operations with immediate effect.

The closure of operations in Mumbai circle affected Uninor?s 1,800,000 subscribers who did not get an opportunity to migrate to other networks. Following the closure of service on February 16, 2013, Uninor has disbursed Rs 400,000 as refunds to its customers.

Uninor has moved resources from each of its operating circles across India and the corporate headquarters to manage and implement the refund process. The operator has asked its subscribers to carry their Uninor SIM cards and a proof of identity of the individual receiving the claim. Uninor would verify the unutilised balance on the SIM and pay out cash refunds on the spot.  Further, Uninor has extended the mobile number portability (MNP) service to its users through the helpline number 9175091750. Customers need not visit Uninor stores to avail MNP service. The operator will be providing port-out codes to customers over the same call instantly. The refunds are being provided at 12 Uninor company and franchisee stores in Mumbai for a period of 15 days.

Sigve Brekke, managing director, Uninor, says, ?I am proud to see the Uninor team choosing to focus their efforts during this difficult time towards our customers. Refunding unutilised balance, though a daunting exercise, is also the right thing to do, the very least we can do for our customers affected by this sudden Court ordered closure in Mumbai.?

Brekke, adds, ?We have been requesting the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to allow number portability for our Mumbai customers. We are thankful to the regulator for accepting our request. Since we had already put the entire process in place while awaiting approvals for launch, Uninor can start providing MNP codes to customers immediately.?
