Union minister for electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that Twitter has chosen to not comply with India’s revised intermediary guidelines and has shown deliberate defiance towards the new IT rules.
The minister further added that the attempts by companies to portray themselves as “flag bearers of free speech in India” in order to excuse themselves from complying with the new IT rules are misplaced.
Earlier this week, the government had said that Twitter did not comply with rules despite letters from the ministry. Consequently, Twitter is believed to have lost legal indemnity in India.
Twitter, however, has claimed that it had complied with the new IT rules and had appointed an interim chief compliance officer.
