Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) has expressed reservation over the issue of shifting its current spectrum usage in the GSM band to make space for operators who won spectrum in the recently concluded 2G spectrum auction.
For example in Bihar, currently, TTSL operates in 1726.2 MHz-1729 MHz band. However, the same band has been sold to Telenor in the recently held auction. Department of Telecommunications (DoT) wants TTSL to shift to other band so that Telenor can be given this spectrum.
Writing to DoT, TTSL has said that shifting from its existing band would cost the company considerable amount of money and hence other alternatives should be looked into. TTSL has suggested that Telenor be given spectrum in another band within the 1800 MHz, especially with unsold spectrum available with the government. The operator has requested DoT that in future if such re-allocation has to be carried out, then it must be done after holding discussions with the incumbent player.
Prior to the auction, DoT had said that the existing users of spectrum maybe be asked to shift within the same frequency band to provide spectrum to new players who have won spectrum in the auctions.
