Speaking at India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022, Dr P.D. Vaghela, chairman, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), informed that the regulator is planning to set up a unified know-your-customer (KYC) system. Vaghela further mentioned that TRAI has been exploring several mechanisms to identify fraudulent callers and spammers.

The proposed KYC set up is to be made accessible for all telecom operators in order to help them identify fraudulent callers and spammers. Meanwhile, Vaghela also expressed TRAI’s plan to include the aforesaid issue in one of the consultation papers on compulsory caller ID display.

Besides, as per Vaghela, the regulator is working with service providers to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to detect fraudulent callers and spammers. In addition, Vaghela noted that TRAI will also look to address privacy concerns around people who do not want their number to be displayed when they make calls.
