The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will issue recommendations on blocking the IMEI of lost and stolen mobile handsets within the next 20 days.

The regulator had been examining this issue since 2004 and published a consultation paper in November, 2010. TRAI has also received comments from various stakeholders on the likely technologies and provisions to deal with this issue.

This recommendation will be followed by two regulations, the Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations (TCPR), 2011 and The Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal Regulations (TCCRR), 2011.

TCCCPR is aimed at strengthening the consumers? complaints redressal system and the objective of TCPR is to safeguard the consumer from the hidden terms and conditions of telecom service providers.
