The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed to levy fine on operators providing poor quality of broadband services.
TRAI plans to impose a fine of Rs 50, 000 on operators for the first violation of standards of quality of services prescribed by it for providing broadband services to the customers. Second violation by operators will attract a penalty of Rs 100, 000.
TRAI has solicited operators? comments before implementing the proposal.
Originally, TRAI had laid down the quality of service standards for broadband in 2006. But at the time there was no provision for imposing penalty on operators found violating these norms. However, the periodic surveys conducted by the regulator revealed that operators were increasingly bypassing the standards of quality set by it while providing broadband services to the subscribers. Therefore, TRAI is of the view that there is a need to a need to provide for financial disincentives for failure to meet the benchmarks.
TRAI plans to implement penalties on operators from January 2013.
