The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning to amend the Telecommunication Tariff Order (TTO), say news reports.
TRAI proposes to introduce stricter penalty norms for operators who violate its regulations on reporting changes in tariff. TRAI mandates that operators inform it about changes in tariff within seven days. It has proposed to levy a late fee of Rs 5,000 per day subject to a maximum of Rs 0.2 billion on operators who do not adhere to this norm.
Additionally, TRAI has observed that certain operators charge subscribers extra amounts in violation of the provisions of TTO. To avoid this, it is considering introducing certain financial disincentives for these operators.
TRAI has asked operators to provide their feedback on the proposed amendments before it finalises the same. Operators have been asked to submit their comments by August 20, 2012.
