In response to the draft National Telecom Policy, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reportedly suggested that incentives be offered to companies developing e-applications in regional languages, say news reports.

Further, the regulator said that such companies should be encouraged to develop customised applications for rural subscribers.

TRAI also recommended defining a regulatory framework for providing affordable value-added services to facilitate entrepreneurship, innovation and provision of region-specific content in regional languages.

Besides, TRAI opines that the government ought to collaborate with the Department of Information Technology to promote the development of local content in regional languages.

Meanwhile, the government has already taken several initiatives to promote e-governance in the country. For instance, the National e-Governance Plan is aimed at establishing core infrastructure and policies in this regard, besides implementing several mission mode projects at the centre, state and integrated service levels.
