TRAI responds to the DoT’s back-reference in respect of the TRAI’s recommendations on “Encouraging Innovative Technologies, Services, Use Cases, and Business Models through Regulatory Sandbox in Digital Communication Sector”

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued its response to the back-reference received from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in respect of the TRAI’s recommendations on “Encouraging Innovative Technologies, Services, Use Cases, and Business Models through Regulatory Sandbox in Digital Communication Sector.”

Earlier, DoT, through a reference dated March 10, 2023, inter-alia requested TRAI, under Section 11(1)(a) of the TRAI Act, 1997, to provide recommendations on framework for regulatory sandbox for emerging technologies, services, and business model in telecom sector.  After a detailed consultation with stakeholders, TRAI provided its abovesaid recommendations, dated April 12, 2024, to DoT.

Subsequently, DoT, through a back-reference dated March 19, 2025, had asked TRAI to reconsider its recommendations dated April 12, 2024. Now, after examining the issue, TRAI has finalised its response to the back-reference.
