The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the recommendation on – Regulatory Framework for over the top communication services.

As part of its recommendations, TRAI has said that now is not an opportune time to recommend a comprehensive regulatory framework for various aspects of OTT services beyond the laws and regulations prescribed presently.

TRAI has noted that as of now market forces may be allowed to respond to the situation without prescribing any regulatory intervention. However, developments will be monitored and interventions, if and when felt necessary, can be introduced at appropriate time.

TRAI also mentioned that no regulatory interventions are required with respect to issues related with privacy and security of OTT services at the moment.

According to TRAI, the matter can be looked into afresh when more clarity emerges in international jurisdictions particularly the study undertaken by the ITU.
