As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) added 2.92 million, 2.15 million and 0.12 million wireless (mobile) subscribers, respectively, during May 2026. Meanwhile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.10 million subscribers month-on-month. Consequently, the wireless subscriber base of Airtel, Jio and Vi increased to 483.80 million, 501.43 million and 198.65 million, respectively, while BSNL’s subscriber base declined to 92.91 million.

Besides, TRAI data showed that Airtel and Jio added 1.56 million and 0.28 million rural wireless subscribers, respectively, during May 2026, while Vi and BSNL lost 0.14 million and 0.94 million subscribers, respectively, in rural India. The data further showed that the overall wireless tele-density increased to 94.02 per cent in May 2026 from 93.69 per cent in April 2026.

Separately, TRAI data showed that Airtel and Jio gained 0.05 million and 0.10 million wireline users, increasing their landline user base to 11.81 million and 15.48 million, respectively, during May 2026. Meanwhile, Vi and BSNL lost 0.01 million and 0.03 million users, respectively, with their landline subscriber base declining to 0.84 million and 7.43 million.

Further, May 2026 witnessed Airtel and Jio strengthening their wireless subscriber market shares to 37.89 per cent and 39.27 per cent, respectively, from 37.81 per cent and 39.25 per cent in April 2026. Meanwhile, Vi and BSNL saw their market shares decline to 15.56 per cent and 7.28 per cent, respectively, from 15.61 per cent and 7.34 per cent in the previous month.

Furthermore, in the month of May 2026, 14.46 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 1,311.29 million at the end of April 2026 to 1,325.75 million at the end of May 2026, since implementation of MNP.
