As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio gained 0.27 million and 2.70 million subscribers respectively, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.27 million and 0.13 million subscribers respectively month-on-month during May 2025. Meanwhile, the wireless subscriber base of Airtel and Jio increased to 390.25 million and 475.10 million respectively. In addition, Vi and BSNL’s user base shrank to 204.43 million and 90.77 million respectively.
Separately, Jio consolidated its market leadership in the wireline space in May 2025. TRAI data showed that Jio gained 1.27 million wireline users, increasing its landline user base to 14.47 million. Airtel and Vi added 0.09 million and 0.001 million users, boosting its wireline user base to around 10.30 million and 0.82 million respectively. Meanwhile, BSNL lost 0.046 million wireline users.
Further, the month of May 2025 witnessed Jio widening its wireless customer market share to 40.92 per cent, up from 40.76 per cent in the previous month. Furthermore, Vi, Airtel and BSNL narrowed their customer base to 17.61 per cent, 33.61 per cent and 7.82 per cent as against 17.66 per cent, 33.65 per cent and 7.84 per cent respectively in April 2025.
Besides, TRAI data showed that Jio gained 1.43 million customers in rural India for wireless. Meanwhile, Vi, Airtel and BSNL lost 0.017 million, 1.04 million and 0.14 million in these geographies. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density decreased marginally to 85.36 per cent in May 2025 from 85.19 per cent in April 2025.
Further, 14.03 million subscribers submitted their requests for mobile number portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 1,132.41 million at the end of April 2025 to 1,146.45 million at the end of May 2025, since implementation of MNP.
