As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) gained 4.41 million, 2.44 million and 0.27 million in wireless (mobile) subscribers respectively, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost 0.41 million subscribers month-on-month during January 2026. Meanwhile, the wireless subscriber base of Airtel, Jio and BSNL increased to 467.79 million, 491.48 million and 93.02 million respectively. In addition, Vi’s user base shrank to 198.35 million.
Besides, TRAI data showed that Airtel, Jio and BSNL gained 1.01 million, 1.03 million and 0.12 million respectively while Vi lost 0.50 million in rural India for wireless. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density increased marginally to 92.22 per cent in January 2026 from 91.74 per cent in December 2025.
Separately, TRAI data showed that Airtel and Jio gained 0.20 million and 0.17 million wireline users, increasing their landline user base to 11.16 million and 14.93 million respectively. Meanwhile, BSNL and Vi saw marginal loss of 0.02 million and 0.0001million users.
Further, the month of January 2026 witnessed Airtel widening its wireless customer market share to 37.40 per cent, up from 37.24 per cent in the previous month. Furthermore, Vi, Jio and BSNL narrowed its customer base to 15.86 per cent, 39.29 per cent and 7.44 per cent as against 15.98 per cent, 39.31 per cent and 7.46 per cent in December 2025.
Furthermore, in the month of January 2026, about 15.98 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 1251.47 million at the end of December 2025 to 1,267.45 million at the end of January 2026, since implementation of MNP.
