As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) gained 0.49 million, 1.94 million and 1.38 million wireless (mobile) subscribers respectively, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost 0.30 million subscribers month-on-month during August 2025. Meanwhile, the wireless subscriber base of Airtel, Jio and BSNL increased to 391.97 million, 479.45 million and 91.74 million respectively. In addition, Vi’s user base shrank to 203.55 million.

Besides, TRAI data showed that Airtel, BSNL and Jio gained 0.45 million, 0.46 million and 0.64 million respectively in rural India for wireless while Vi lost 0.50 million subscribers in these geographies. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density increased marginally to 86.40 per cent in August 2025 from 86.15 per cent in July 2025.

Separately, Airtel and Vi consolidated its market leadership in the wireline space in August 2025. TRAI data showed that Airtel and Vi gained 0.10 million and 0.024 million wireline users, increasing their landline user base to 10.56 million and 0.77 million respectively. Meanwhile, BSNL and Jio lost 0.0056 and 1.55 million wireline users respectively.

Further, the month of August 2025 witnessed Jio and Airtel widening their wireless customer market share to 41.04 per cent and 33.65 per cent respectively, up from 41.02 per cent and 33.62 per cent respectively in the previous month. Furthermore, Vi and BSNL narrowed their customer base to 17.52 per cent and 7.77 per cent as against 17.56 per cent and 7.78 per cent respectively in June 2025.

Further, the month of August 2025 witnessed Jio and BSNL widening their wireless customer market share to 41.08 per cent and 7.86 per cent respectively, up from 41.04 per cent and 7.77 per cent respectively in the previous month. Furthermore, Airtel and Vi narrowed their customer base to 33.59 per cent and 17.44 per cent as against 33.65 per cent and 17.52 per cent respectively in July 2025.

Further, in the month of August 2025, 15.05 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 1,175.43 million at the end of July 2025 to 1,190.48 million at the end of August 2025, since implementation of MNP.
