
As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio gained 0.17 million and 2.64 million subscribers respectively, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.64 million and 0.15 million subscribers respectively month-on-month during April 2025. Meanwhile, the wireless subscriber base of Airtel and Jio increased to 389.97 million and 472.40 million respectively. In addition, Vi and BSNL’s user base shrank to 204.71 million and 90.90 million respectively.
Separately, Jio consolidated its market leadership in the wireline space in April 2025. TRAI data showed that Jio gained 0.34 million wireline users, increasing its landline user base to 13.19 million. Airtel added 0.06 million users, boosting its wireline user base to around 10.20 million. Meanwhile, BSNL and Vi lost 0.064 million and 0.008 million wireline users respectively.
Further, the month of April 2025 witnessed Jio widening its wireless customer market share to 40.76 per cent, up from 40.60 per cent in the previous month. Furthermore, Vi, Airtel and BSNL narrowed their customer base to 17.66 per cent, 33.65 per cent and 7.84 per cent as against 17.75 per cent, 33.69 per cent and 7.87 per cent respectively in March 2025.
Besides, TRAI data showed that Airtel, Jio and BSNL gained 0.37 million, 1.23 million and 0.26 million customers respectively in rural India for wireless. Meanwhile, Vi lost 0.18 million in these geographies. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density decreased marginally to 85.19 per cent in April 2025 from 85.04 per cent in March 2025.
In the month of April 2025, 13.48 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 1,118.94 million at the end of March 2025 to 1,132.41 million at the end of April 2025, since implementation of MNP.
