The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper titled “Delivering Broadband Quickly: What do we need to do?” The paper has been floated to meet objectives of National Telecom Policy, 2012. It invites stakeholders? views to discuss factors contributing to poor broadband penetration in India and actions required to be taken both by the government and the private sector to accelerate the proliferation of broadband in the country.

TRAI is of the view that while the country has a broadband policy in place since 2004 and several initiatives have been undertaken on the same, the performance has been dismal, as compared to most other countries.

In the consultation paper, TRAI has also sought industry views on the measures to reduce the cost of deploying various broadband technologies, measures to encourage content service providers to host content in the data center situated within India and issues in laying optical fibre and making spectrum bands available for Wi-Fi technology.
