TRAI has initiated the consultation process for introduction of number portability in the country. If implemented, this facility would enable phone users to retain their mobile numbers even if they change operators. While this will benefit consumers, it is likely to increase competition amongst service providers. Moreover, service providers will have to make additional investments and incur costs to effect technical changes. The service is expected to be restricted to the mobile sector initially and be extended to fixed line phones subsequently.
