The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has implemented new rules to curb unwanted calls and messages from unknown numbers with effect from May 1, 2023. This move was taken to protect the Indian consumers from fraud and harassment.

The new rule requires all telecom companies to use artificial intelligence (AI) spam filters for their calls and SMS services. The filters will identify and block fake and spam calls and messages from various sources. Telecom operators like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio have already agreed to implement the AI filter service.

The regulatory body has also asked telecom companies to not send promotional calls on 10 digit mobile numbers, which are often used by scammers. The government has asked telcos to implement a call ID feature that will help customers identify the caller by showing their photo and name on the mobile phone screen. However, telcos are reportedly reluctant to use this technology due to privacy reasons.
