TRAI has recommended that internet service providers (ISPs) be allowed to offer unrestricted internet telephony services. It has also recommended that national long distance (NLD) operators be permitted to connect to ISPs through the public internet for offering unrestricted internet telephony services. However, NLD operators must make suitable commercial and technical arrangements with access (PSTN/PLMN) providers for the same. The regulator has also suggested that the Telecom Engineering Centre identify distinct number resources for internet telephony subscribers and allocate telephone numbers from identified blocks to ISPs, unified access service providers, basic service operators and cellular mobile service providers.
