TRAI has questioned DoT’s stance at the recently held World Radio Communication (WRC) Conference, where DoT held that India would not support inclusion of the 450 MHz frequency as part of 3G spectrum bands. According to TRAI, the government cannot adopt such a stance at the global level without consulting the regulator. TRAI had earlier recommended that this frequency be allocated to CDMA operators for their 3G rollout, especially in rural India. DoT’s position at the WRC not only contradicts that of TRAI, but also that of the defence forces and the National Working Group-8, formed to map out India’s position on these issues.
