The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has granted additional time till August 10, 2020, to Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) to submit their detailed response on the fresh set of queries on premium plans.

On July 31, 2020, TRAI had sent questions to Airtel and VIL over the premium plans issue and had asked them to explain their stand on August 4, 2020. However, an extension has now been given as VIL had requested for more time to submit its detailed response.

In its latest letter dated July 31, 2020, TRAI questioned the mismatch between VIL and Airtel’s stated positions on differential data speeds, and their actual offerings under their RedX and Platinum plans, respectively. Further, it has pointed out that while both telcos have claimed they are not offering differential broadband speeds under any wireless plans, they have precisely done so under their RedX and Platinum offers respectively.

Further, TRAI asked VIL and Airtel why RedX and Platinum were not flagged as new types of services, which would have prompted the regulator to examine them under a different lens before approving their launch in the market.
