The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on August 29, 2025, for the first time, is reportedly evaluating a scheme to provide consumers with second-hand gadgets such as laptops and mobile phones, aimed at enhancing digital adoption in the country.
At present, the United Kingdom and Vodafone Group Plc already have initiatives for refurbished devices to encourage digital inclusion.
According to market estimates, India has more than 650 million smartphone users, while the feature phone base stands at around 200 to 250 million, a number steadily declining as affordable 4G and 5G handsets gain traction.
