The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a directive asking telecom operators to submit the status report of complaints regarding pesky calls on a monthly basis beginning from September 2019 and within ten days from the end of each calendar month.

Further, TRAI has specified a format in which the compliance report has to be submitted by operators. The parameters specified under the format include number of complaints received from customers, complaints pending resolution, complaints rejected on account of insufficient details, complaints found valid after investigation, among others.

The move has been undertaken under the TRAI’s new rules that aim to check unsolicited commercial communication (UCC) in the form of unwarranted telemarketing calls and messages. TRAI has laid certain obligations for operators under the new rules that include evolving code of practices, maintaining records, registering customers’ preferences, and mandating the adoption of blockchain or the distributed ledger technology.
