The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked operators to provide broadband users with adequate information to ensure greater transparency in the delivery of these services. These directives are aimed at protecting the users’ interests.

As per TRAI’s directives, operators are required to provide users with information pertaining to various broadband plans and to the fair usage policy (FUP).

Under the FUP, operators are required to ensure that broadband speed does not fall below the minimum speed specified. Also, operators are to provide alerts to consumers when they approach the data limit specified under the plan. The regulator is of the view that this stipulation will help users make an informed choice while opting for a data plan.

The directions also specify that operators will have to provide new users with information pertaining to the speed of their broadband connection up to and beyond the limit on data usage in printed form. Existing customers can access this information via email or text messages.

Operators also have to ensure that the speed of the internet connection should not dip below 256 kbps.
