The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a strict warning to business entities sending bulk SMSs to comply with regulations on unsolicited commercial communication.

According to the TRAI, entities failing to comply with the regulations will be debarred from sending SMSs using telecom resources.

The regulator has decided that those principal entities which do not comply with the regulatory requirements, will be notified by the access providers to comply with the regulatory requirements within three days time period failing which the names of defaulting entities would be displayed on the website. Even after this period, if they fail to fulfill the regulatory requirements, they would not be allowed to send bulk communication using telecom resources.

The authority had directed the telcos to switch off SMS filters which were activated earlier as per stated regulations for verifying unique SMS headers and content.
