TRAI has directed all operators to intimate new subscribers of their credit limit within the first seven days of activation of service. Subscribers are also to be informed in advance of the consequences of usage and other applicable charges on exceeding the credit limit, as well as the manner in which the credit limit can be enhanced. According to TRAI, operators cannot disrupt or disconnect services to subscribers unless the credit limit has been exceeded or if the exceeded amount is below the security deposit. Also, customers are to be intimated when they reach 80 per cent of their credit limit. On receipt of the intimation, the subscriber will have the option to make interim payments in whole or in part or to restrict further usage so that the credit limit is not exceeded.
